Tau Films Adds Visual Effects to the Magic of Shankar's 2.0

Tau Films completed more than 120 visual effects (VFX) shots for Shankar’s 2.0, released today, November 29, 2018. The film, produced by Lyca Productions, is one of India’s most anticipated, sci-fi blockbusters of 2018 and is the sequel to Enthiran (2010). The final stereo 3D spectacle is said to contain nearly 2150 VFX shots and set a new bar for Indian cinema.
Tau Films was deeply involved with the film from 2015, coming on board early in the production process to collaborate with Shankar and VFX Supervisor Srinivas Mohan on the conceptual design key characters, effects and visuals along with Legacy FX and other partners. Starting from deep conversations with Shankar on the details of his vision, Tau Films created the finished look and animation of hero characters, Chitti (in his various forms) and his nemesis, Pakshi Rajan, played by Indian matinee idols, Rajnikanth and Akshay Kumar respectively. Tau Films supervised visual effects over the course of filming in Chennai and Delhi as well as second unit shooting in Bolivia and Ukraine. Tau Films also handled the design of and motion capture for the iconic stadium battle sequence in collaboration with action director Nick Powell. Tau Films produced previsualization for the majority of the film as a way to explore the visual language required to bring the story to life, integrating work also done by The Third Floor and Firefly Studio. In addition, Tau Films built CG cities, massive crowds and developed much of the technology behind the cellphone nemeses that are at the heart of the film. The CG development and shot work at Tau Films was helmed by VFX Supervisor, Walt Jones, whose credits include Oscar-winning VFX projects such as Life of Pi (2012) and Golden Compass (2007).

It required a complete reimagining of much of the production process and presented challenges which were entirely new,” said Jones. “Spending over a year on set with Shankar, Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar, Srinivas and 2.0 Cinematographer Nirav Shah, allowed us to really understand the soul of the story and align everything for VFX to service that narrative and create the kind of spectacle that the fans expect. The final product is a testament to the hard work and creativity of hundreds Tau artists and production staff around the world.”
