Tau Films Leads Animation & VFX of The Yinyang Master

Tau Films, a global creative content and VFX group with locations in Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Hyderabad, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Vancouver created the creatures, environments, FX, and digital doubles for the Chinese blockbuster, The Yinyang Master (2021), directed by Weiran Li. Using their remote-enabled pipeline, the global crew of artists and production staff delivered 331 shots with characters and fantastic worlds inspired by the NetEase mobile game, Onmyoji (itself based on the eponymous novel series by Baku Yumemakura).
“Tau Films had the bulk of the most complicated character animation shots as well as some difficult FX work,” noted Justin Jones, the client-side VFX Supervisor. “Along with that, they built many of the CG assets that were shared across multiple vendors on the film. Tau's ability to dig deep into what worked and what was problematic as the show went on built a solid workflow that allowed them to be nimble as the work transformed around them.”

The VFX work for the fantasy feature continued through the COVID-19 pandemic. “During the heart of VFX production, because of COVID-19, we had to go on lockdown forcing everyone to work remotely,” recalled CJ Sarachene, Client-Side Animation Director. “Fortunately, Tau Films had a remote studio pipeline already set up as part of their working paradigm. This allowed a smooth transition for all artists to work remotely from home and kept the iterations going allowing for higher quality of work to be completed by Tau Films.”

Tau Films President/CEO, John Hughes, remained involved with the creative heads in Beijing to ensure that the VFX crew was in sync with Director Weiran Li’s creative input. "Tau Films was involved in the production from the very beginning,” noted John Hughes. “We worked very hard to deliver Weiran Li’s vision. Alfonso De La Torre did most of the character and concept design for the show, CJ Sarachene was the Animation Director, Walt Jones and Justin Jones were the show’s overall VFX Supervisors, Jateen Thakkar and Pranesh Chavan were Tau’s internal Visual Effects Supervisors, and Joel Hynek and I were the on-set supervisors. We delivered the film’s most complex VFX work which involved creatures, digital humans, FX, and environments."
